Public Meeting Confederate Monument

“There comes a time when one must take the position that is neither safe nor politic nor popular, but he must do it because conscience tells him it is right.”

― Martin Luther King Jr.

Brunswick’s Mayor and City Commissioners will take comments from the public on the fate of the Hanover Square Confederate Monument when they meet September 16 at 5 PM. Your voice is needed.

Please speak out and tell them we cannot overcome racism, heal the wounds of Ahmaud Arbery’s murder and become a united community while we continue to let a monument to the cruelty of slavery, lynching and Jim Crow segregation stand in our public space.

This monument was erected in 1902, in the era of Jim Crow, when lynching was common and Black citizens of the South continued to be enslaved by intimidation and forced labor. The plaque it bears denies the truth of our history, describing the war fought to maintain the sin of slavery as a romantic effort fought by “warriors tried and true, who bore the flag of our nation’s trust, and fell in the cause, though lost, still just…”

If Birmingham, Montgomery, Mobile, Little Rock, Daytona Beach, Gainesville, Bowling Green, Lexington, Louisville, Decatur and so many other southern cities and towns can stand against their states’ unjust laws in order to stand on the right side of history, our fine leaders in Brunswick can surely find the courage and wisdom to do the same.

This is the first item on the agenda for Wednesday’s meeting. Plan to arrive as early as possible to ensure you will get in.

If you will not participate in the meeting at Old City Hall in person due to Covid-19 concerns, please participate via zoom.
